How not to let negativity get to you

I HEARD the most empowering quote the other day and although I’m yet to discover who said it, I want to share it with you:

“An entire body of water the size of the Pacific Ocean can’t sink a ship unless it gets inside the ship. Similarly, all the negativity in the world can’t bring you down unless you allow it to get inside your head.”

Negative people, negative behavior and negative thoughts have the power to bring us down, drain us of energy, make us feel stuck and stop us living a life we love.

In order to live a happy, healthy and balanced life we need to be aware of the negativity in our lives and start letting it go piece by piece.

So ask yourself:

Is there a situation in your life that drains you?
Is there a person who makes you feel uncomfortable or uneasy?
Do you complain about things often?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it may be a sign that there is too much negativity in your life.

To me, negativity comes in many different forms:

It’s the dis-empowering thoughts you have about yourself.
The toxic people in your life that make you feel less than amazing; food that makes you feel unwell but you eat it anyway;
Habits or behavior that stop you from being the person you want to be, they are all blocks and are not serving you.

When you start to become aware of them, you have the power to change them.

It can be much easier said than done, however it is possible.

If you choose to make positivity and happiness a habit, you can change your life for the better.

Here are some ways you can start clearing out the negativity in your life.

Take ownership of your life and where you are right now.

Decide that you are worthy of change and being the person you want to be.

When someone directs their negativity towards you please know that it’s not about you.

It can be hard to detach yourself from that person or situation, but you can start by realizing that it’s their issue and stuff, not yours.

Give yourself some space.

Take the day off work, have some time off social media, stop watching the news. Instead give yourself time to breathe.

Go for a walk, call up a friend and have an uplifting chat, have a bath, do something that leaves you feeling more calm and relaxed.

Let go of toxic people.

These people are the ones who subtly or not so subtly drain you of energy, are openly critical of you, hostile, angry, or leave you with an uncomfortable or uneasy feeling.

Slowly pull yourself away from them.

You could start by imagining yourself in a white bubble each time you are with them.

Their negativity bounces off the bubble and no longer finds its way inside you.

Try to see less and less of them.

Spend time with those who lift you up.

They support your ideas and ambitions no matter how scary or risky they may seem.

They make you laugh and smile and you walk away from them feeling vibrant and energised.

Replace negative thoughts with positive ones

Negative self-talk, gossiping or complaining are energy drainers.

Catch yourself and replace them with something positive.

Journal it out.

What they said, how you feel, what’s happening in your life.

Write it all out so it stops swimming around in your mind each day.

It’s an incredibly therapeutic way of clearing out your mind.

Cry it out.

Sometimes we just need a big old cry.

Try movement or meditation.

Get your blood pumping or slow down your mind so you can clear out any anxiety or stress.

Listen to music.

It’s a powerful way to raise your vibration and get you feeling happy and calm.
